Delivering Secure, Adaptive Streaming with DoveRunner: A Technical Guide to Cloud-Native Transcoding & Packaging

Getting a title ready to stream is rarely one job. You transcode. You build the bitrate ladder. You package for DASH, HLS, or CMAF. Then you hand the output to a DRM system, and maybe to a watermarking system after that. Every handoff is another integration to maintain, another place a job can fail, and another reason a launch slips.

The DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging (T&P) Service collapses those stages into one automated workflow. Transcoding, adaptive packaging, multi-DRM encryption, and forensic watermarking run in a single pass, so content comes out of the pipeline already secured and ready for your CDN. It runs entirely on AWS, uses your own S3 buckets for input and output, and bills only for the resources each job consumes — no encoding hardware to provision, no annual infrastructure commitment.

The service supports three job types: transcoding with forensic watermarking and DRM, transcoding with DRM, and transcoding with forensic watermarking. You pick the level of protection each title needs and the workflow adjusts around it. If you already subscribe to DoveRunner Multi-DRM or DoveRunner Forensic Watermarking, T&P is the pipeline that puts those services to work on every asset you prepare.

This technical guide walks through:

  • What the DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging Service does and how the workflow is sequenced
  • Technical and operational benefits, from time-to-market to cost structure
  • Core capabilities, supported job types, and input/output formats
  • Use cases across VOD, premium DRM, watermarking, multi-language, and near-live delivery
  • Integration steps, common onboarding pitfalls, and where T&P sits in your OTT pipeline
  • Technical considerations: supported AWS regions, rendition and track limits, resolution and bitrate ranges, and performance characteristics

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging Service?

The DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging (TNP) Service is a cloud-native SaaS service that combines transcoding, adaptive bitrate packaging, multi-DRM encryption, and forensic watermarking in a single automated workflow. Transcoding converts a source file into the codecs and resolutions your audience’s devices can play, and packaging wraps those renditions into an adaptive format — MPEG-DASH, HLS, or CMAF — so a player can switch quality levels as network conditions change. DoveRunner applies encryption and watermarking during transcoding rather than as post-processing steps, and runs all compute in its own cloud environment, so you provision no encoding hardware.

What do I need to subscribe to in order to use the T&P Service?

The DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging Service requires a subscription to DoveRunner Multi-DRM, DoveRunner Forensic Watermarking, or both. Your subscriptions determine which job types are available to you:

Job typeRequires Multi-DRMRequires Forensic Watermarking
Transcode + forensic watermark + DRMYesYes
Transcode + DRM (video or audio-only)YesNo
Transcode + forensic watermarkNoYes

With Forensic Watermarking alone, you can run watermarking jobs. With Multi-DRM alone, you can run DRM packaging jobs. With both, every job type is open to you, including the combined workflow.

What input and output formats does the T&P Service support?

AWS regionsOregon, Seoul
Input codecsH.264, H.265, AV1
Output formatsDASH / HLS / CMAF; H.264 / H.265; AAC / AC3; AV1
Resolution rangeSD, HD/FHD, UHD (4K) and dynamic range to be added
Bitrate range10 Kbps to 100 Mbps
RenditionsUp to 6
TracksUp to 10 audio, up to 10 subtitle (commercial)
Typical turnaround~5 minutes to ~1 hour per VOD asset

Does the T&P Service support live streaming?

No. The DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging Service supports file-based VOD workflows only. It does handle near-live and rapid-turnaround content such as news clips, interviews, and sports highlights, where assets are prepared shortly after recording. Typical jobs run from roughly five minutes to about an hour per asset, depending on duration, codec configuration, and the number of output resolutions.

How does the T&P Service fit into an existing OTT pipeline?

The DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging Service sits between ingest and output storage: ingest, T&P, S3 output, CDN, player. You supply the AWS S3 buckets and configure IAM permissions for read access to input content and write access to the output location. Packaged assets hand off cleanly to downstream CDNs and origin servers, and AWS SNS can push job success and failure notifications to a topic or Lambda function.

How is the T&P Service priced?

The DoveRunner Transcoding & Packaging Service is priced on usage. You pay for the resources each job consumes, which suits platforms with fluctuating workloads, seasonal demand, or project-based pipelines. There is no annual infrastructure commitment.

Does DoveRunner’s T&P Service provide DRM encryption for vertical video?

Yes. DRM encryption is applied to the video bitstream, so aspect ratio and orientation don’t affect it. Vertical content — social-first video and mobile-native short form — is protected the same way as landscape, using the same license and key delivery flow.

Does DoveRunner’s T&P Service provide DRM encryption for audio as well?

Yes, DRM workflows apply equally to both video- and audio-based and audio-only pipelines, enabling secure delivery of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and other audio-centric media.
