Huawei Wiseplay DRM Whitepaper

If your audience includes Huawei smartphone, tablet, or smart TV users, Widevine, PlayReady, and FairPlay won’t cover them on their own. Huawei devices use their own DRM, Huawei WisePlay, to protect premium content, and getting it right means understanding how it handles encryption, licensing, and secure playback.

Delivering Secure Playback on Huawei Devices: A Technical Guide to WisePlay DRM With DoveRunner walks you through how WisePlay works and where it fits in your content protection strategy. You’ll see how content moves from encryption and packaging on the server to license acquisition and playback on the device. You’ll also see how WisePlay runs alongside other DRMs in a multi-DRM deployment.

Frequently asked questions

What is Huawei WisePlay DRM?

Huawei WisePlay DRM is the digital rights management technology Huawei developed to protect premium video on its own devices. Built on the ChinaDRM standard, it encrypts content and enforces playback controls on Huawei smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs, using trusted hardware where available.

Which devices support WisePlay DRM?

WisePlay DRM supports Huawei smartphones and tablets running EMUI 11.0 or later or HarmonyOS 2.0 or later, with Kirin 990 chipset devices supported from EMUI 10.1. It also supports Huawei Vision Smart TVs and Huawei set-top boxes running HarmonyOS 2.0 or later.

Does WisePlay DRM work in web browsers or on non-Huawei devices?

No. WisePlay DRM runs only in native apps on Huawei devices. It doesn’t support browser, desktop, or non-Huawei device playback. For those platforms, you’d use Widevine, PlayReady, or FairPlay as part of a multi-DRM deployment.

How does WisePlay DRM fit into a multi-DRM strategy?

WisePlay secures playback on Huawei devices, while Widevine, PlayReady, and FairPlay protect content on other platforms. With a multi-DRM service like DoveRunner Multi-DRM, you can manage licenses, keys, and playback policies for all of them through a single interface.

What streaming formats and encryption does WisePlay DRM support?

WisePlay DRM supports MPEG-DASH (fMP4) with CENC AES-128-CTR encryption and HLS (fMP4 and TS) with AES-128-CBC encryption. CMAF is supported optionally with AES-CTR or AES-CBC.

What happens on Huawei devices without a trusted execution environment?

On devices without a trusted execution environment (TEE), WisePlay falls back to a rich execution environment (REE). Encryption and license validation are still enforced, but in software rather than secure hardware.

Does WisePlay DRM support offline playback?

Yes. WisePlay supports offline playback through stored licenses with two configurable limits: how long downloaded content stays valid, and how long it can be watched once playback begins. Licenses can be renewed when the device reconnects.
